Welcoming women from the UK is something New Directions has done for over 40 years. We understand that being safe when you are far away from home is of utter importance. Our team will guide from initial flight, to airport pick-up, through the admission process. Women with substance-abuse problems can need inpatient or outpatient treatment – happily, New Directions for Women caters for both options, our Drug and Alcohol Services provide a full continuum of care for lasting results and successful living: Detox, Outpatient Programme, Intensive Sober Living, Family Programme, Aftercare and Alumnae support so that mothers can concentrate on their recovery. Our services are integrated clinically and therapeutically – and geographically on the one campus for optimal coordination and monitoring. Detox takes place in Pfister House, residential care in Founders Hall and Courage House, our home for mothers and children is Faith House, there is a holistic room in Grace House, and there are two sober homes nearby.

Detox, including for pregnant women

There is no need for ‘cold turkey’ at NDFW! We closely monitor detoxification (detox) of clients when necessary, the physiological or medicinal removal of toxic substances from the body after long-term use of addictive substances. There are 4 main types of detox for alcoholics and addicts: cold turkey as featured in movies or via specialised detox centres, a medical detox facility or a rapid detox centre. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, and we can help explain the options before you decide on treatment. New Directions for Women can even offer substance-abuse detox for pregnant women. This is critical when a woman is carrying a child, as drug toxins can remain inside the body and make their way into the baby’s blood stream. The side effects for the child can vary from low birth weight, fetal alcohol syndrome, short attention span, retarded mental growth and many other life changing defects. Enduring a detox program can increase the odds of having a baby born free of these birth defects and chemical dependency. At NDFW, we regard this as a chance to help two people at the same time, and the rewards do not get any greater than being a part of a life-saving experience.

Residential Treatment, including for pregnant women and mothers

Chronic alcohol and/or drug abuse takes a heavier physical toll on women than on men. In addition, demands made on them by families, and feeling they must be strong for others, often mean that they need more intensive care. Our multidisciplinary treatment team of Master’s Level Licensed Therapists and Certified Addiction Counsellors provides comprehensive, individualised residential rehab and intensive outpatient addiction treatment. Grounded in the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous ongoing support, our detox and rehab model includes a multidisciplinary, multifaceted social approach to the treatment of chemical dependency. Being a women-only addiction treatment programme, we provide gender separate, culturally relevant and holistic addiction treatment services that meet the special needs of women, women with children and their families. Chemical dependency can be coupled with other co-occurring disorders such as mental health issues, trauma, sex addiction, family dysfunction and other addictive disorders; addressing and treating these is part of our specialty skills.

Residential services

By addressing the holistic needs of every aspect of our clients’ lives, including, spiritual, emotional, physical, social and intellectual, we facilitate their journey in recovery, encouraging them to rejoin their communities as healthy, whole women and families. We offer successive levels of residential care from First Stage to Extended Phase services. A minimum commitment of 30 days is required, for clinical improvements to take place; the average length of stay is 90 days but can be longer, depending on client needs. Our First Stage programme is highly structured and provides intensive therapy. Each woman is assigned a Masters Level Primary Therapist or a Certified Addiction Counsellor with whom she creates an individualised treatment plan. We also provide art expression, gardening, psychodrama, experiential and spiritual therapies. Our women and their families are then allowed to move into a Transitional Phase programme that allows more autonomy while still engaging them with all the services provided during First Stage. Women begin to practice the tools of their recovery in the community while in school, working or volunteering. In the evening, they return to the safety of their recovery community here. Each woman is encouraged to develop healthy, meaningful relationships with sponsors, alumni and other women in recovery. Each woman continues to work individually with her Therapist or Counsellor and develops an individual plan that encompasses her goals in life regarding education, employment, living arrangements, children, family, self-care, etc. The average length of stay is 45 days. Lastly, women and their families can move into an Extended Care Phase. This is our most autonomous residential level, respecting the amount of independence each woman has now earned. Each woman continues to receive individual, family and group counselling while further practicing the tools of their recovery in the community.

Intensive outpatient programme

For some women, learning to live without drugs or alcohol needn’t take days away from work, family or school. That’s why we created a treatment programme women can attend in the evenings. It combines several therapeutic components scheduled each night for 16 consecutive weeks. It is based on the evidence-based Matrix Model, which recognises the diversity and individuality of each client’s stage in recovery. Recovery skills, relapse prevention, family involvement, individual therapy and 12-step involvement are emphasised. Weekly random drug tests back up this successful work. Clients can enter the programme at any stage as the model accommodates people in various stages of early recovery.

Family Services

At New Directions for Women, we are committed to healing the whole family that has been profoundly affected by the disease of chemical dependency. Those of you who have experienced the emotional pain of broken promises, false hopes and other common effects of this disease deserve the chance to identify and voice your own thoughts and feelings. We encourage your commitment to becoming involved with our family treatment programme. This way, you not only start a recovery process for yourself but you are also strengthened to handle others’ addictive behaviours – and understand their recovery. You will create healthier, happier futures.

Early Child Development

At New Directions for Women, we specialise in treating children both living and not living with their mom throughout their treatment experience. During our children’s stay in Faith House on our campus, they will receive early intervention services and individual treatment services that address each child’s individualised needs. Children (ages 0 – 13) will receive counselling services that help build emotional strength and deepen their resilience.

Some of our therapies

We offer individual and group therapy to women and specialized psycho-educational groups such as relapse prevention, communication, grief and anger management, and life skills workshops to facilitate growth. In addition, our focus on the client has led us to offer also: experiential therapies, including trauma therapy, concurrent medical issues, psychodrama, spirituality and meditation, exercise, and spa treatments.

Aftercare and followup

Continuing care for a client after residential treatment has been completed is essential in maintaining sobriety and continuing the development of sober life skills. New Directions offers a number of alternatives – women can discuss these during the treatment process, as our discharge planning will be based on discoveries during their stay and their very latest assessment. The National Council of Alcoholism and Drug Dependency found that, irrespective of the amount of initial care, a minimum of 3 months’ continued maintenance care service is necessary to achieve a significant increase in one-year abstinence. NDFW takes responsibility in following up with every woman who receives services from us, at specific intervals to track her continued recovery process. With us, aftercare is for life.

NDFW alumnae association

We are proud to have alumnae – women who graduated from our programmes – from all over the US and, more recently, internationally. Their lifelong recovery journey starts here, and that is why we have invested so deeply in our Alumnae Association. Over 5,000 women have entered our doors, and we connect them with each other for mutual support. Our alumnae coordinator is a graduate of NDFW. It is her belief that sobriety and recovery flourish when we connect with our fellow sobriety sisters and plant our roots firmly in a strong foundation. She also administers follow-up surveys to clients at 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, 6 months, and a year after discharge so we can track outcomes through our Quality Improvement department, and stay in the loop with our recent graduates. There are at least two alumnae events on our campus each month, including a dinner speaker panel where women come back to share their story with our current residents over dinner. It is important to have fun in recovery! We have an Easter Brunch, overnight Alumnae Retreat and Reunion, a Halloween Party, a Holiday Party and other festive events to provide a fun, sober environment for clients

and alumnae. By participating in the Alumnae organization, women learn that they can have a fun and fulfilling life in sobriety while giving back to others. For example, our local alumnae chapter is very active in providing ancillary services to all of our women in treatment. They provide temporary sponsors, transportation, beach parties, holiday parties and other “Fun-in-Recovery” services.
